    Position Summary

    Summit Body has served the commercial truck and transportation industry in the Pacific Northwest for over 35 years building and upfitting dry vans, flatbeds and refrigerated vans. In 2021, Summit acquired a Seattle-area service center, which repairs and refinishes all makes and models of medium, heavy duty, specialty, and fleet vehicles.

    The Fabrication Coordinator is responsible for leading a fabrication team to produce proprietary parts required in advance of their use in the truck body assembly process, along with meeting the daily production schedule by training and adhering to established fabrication drawings, specifications and Standard Work Instructions (SWI). Working closely with the Production Manager, the Fabrication Coordinator is responsible for training employees in documented standard work methods and quality expectations so their team can complete their work assignment safely and to quality standards at the expected work pace. The Fabrication Coordinator is also responsible for analyzing materials requirements, developing production plans and assigning work to ensure all proprietary parts are available in advance of use in production. They are responsible for communicating modifications to the established Standard Work Instructions, through process improvements or tooling, with the purpose of improving quality or reducing labor content as the champion for continuous improvement throughout the team. This is not a daily working supervisor position, except while training employees in their new job routines or filling in for employees who are absent. The Fabrication Coordinator may need to assist a new team member in the completion of work tasks in order to maintain the line pace as a part of the training process. This is a critical role to maintain the pace and quality of the manufacturing line. The ideal candidate collaborates well, has an eye for detail, and follows written instructions well.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Perform all duties of the Production and Welding/Fabrication Specialist required in the sub-frame and rear frame work centers at an expert level.
    • Provide, train and clearly communicate Standard Work Instructions (SWI) sequencing and quality standards for the sub-frame and rear frame work centers and ensure strict team adherence to these practices.
    • Be able to operate and train others how to safely use all tools and equipment required in the areas of responsibility.
    • Ensure a high level of teamwork and maintain workflow at a pace that meets or exceeds takt/process time as defined by the SWI. Conduct observations as necessary to validate process takt time.
    • Maintain a team-wide continuous improvement approach to the SWI and suggest regularly ways to improve efficiency or quality through process or tooling improvements.
    • Assist Production Manager in building production schedule and meeting customer’s demand for product and lead-times.
    • Analyze Materials Requirement Plans and deploy resources to ensure no truck body goes into production without all fabricated materials available in advance of their use on the assembly line.
    • Constantly look for opportunities to improve efficiency by maximizing supermarket opportunities when assigning fabrication tasks. This involves two things to include looking forward in the production schedule to identity future need of common parts, along with maximizing the number of parts produced based on the amount the raw material will yield.
    • Participate regularly with other operations coordinators in the schedule review meeting to ensure that the scope of fabrication work each week does not exceed the capacity of the team.
    • Always maintain a safe work environment and report any unsafe conditions to management immediately.
    • Participate on the Safety Committee as needed as a representative of the production leadership team.
    • Motivate, coach, and train team members to safely complete their work assignments according to the SWI while meeting the established line pace (or forecasted process time) and product quality expectations.
    • Interview potential new team members for hire, perform employee performance reviews, and coach and counsel team members through the workplace corrective action/disciplinary process.
    • Be the SWI Champion for your area of production and ensure that the most recent version of the SWI is used in training, provided to each employee, and a laminated copy is on display in the work area.
    • With minimal direction, troubleshoot and solve production problems affecting the employees’ ability to meet the production schedule at pace and the product quality expectations.
    • Monitor and analyze production quality, productivity, and production data for trends and improvements.
    • Ensure that CAD files for all parts are available, and that all files used to produce parts are accurate and match the final product. Report any discrepancy to the Production Manager and keep a record of all parts needing a CAD update until the changes have been approved and reconciled.
    • Maintain a clean, organized production and material storage area at all times.
    • Assist the Production Manager with additional tasks as requested.


    • High-school diploma, GED and/or relevant experience.
    • Basic entry level computer skills in MS Outlook, Word and Excel.
    • Ability to motivate and coach employees to grow and stretch themselves without showing favoritism towards employees.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills for training employees and updating standard work instructions. Bi-lingual skills are a plus.
    • Ability to safely operate all the various hand and pneumatic tools, power tools, cranes, measuring devices, forklift, fabrication equipment and MIG welders.
    • Must pass pre-employment drug test and annual random retesting.
    • Must have your own transportation and valid driver’s license.

    Work Environment

    The factory noise level may require ear protection. The work area has forklift traffic and will occasionally require exposure to wet conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration. Intermittently throughout the day you will be required to go outside in various weather conditions. On occasion there may be a need to lift, carry, push, and pull 75 lbs. Stooping, bending, twisting, climbing ladders and standing for periods of time may occasionally be required.

    Work Hours

    The Fabrication Coordinator’s routine work hours are Monday through Thursday from 5:45 am to 4:30 pm. The workweek may expand up to 50 hours per week and/or Saturday overtime to meet customer demand.
